No. 327   THE MODEL AND THE SLAUGHTERHOUSE
24 " W x 36 " H,  60 cm W x 90 cm H
Material   Acrylic on Wood
Artist   A.H. Clemens
Painted   September 2003,
Waiwhetu, Lower Hutt, New Zealand

A backdrop of slaughtered animal carcasses.  Blood and entrails drip onto the floor. Overhead, cold blue and grimy green colours are suggestive of icy build-up on the ceiling of a refrigeration unit – certainly not of open blue sky.

A golden door magically appears.  A beautiful model steps through it and walks towards us.  She walks with that strange calculated mix of unnaturalness and sensuality that models somehow manage to convey.  Her trailing right hand almost blends into the carcass behind her.

Slaughterhouses and catwalks.  The repulsive and the attractive. Dead and living. The eye darts back and forward between them and cannot decide which it finds the more appealing.
