This picture is a mass of unresolvable contradictions.  A barefoot couple indulging in a bit of casual horseplay have their attention diverted by some event off to the right hand side of the painting.  Their dog is also looking in the same direction.  Neither the couple nor their dog look at all alarmed by whatever it is that has their attention.  The only instinctive action is for the lady to gently restrain her partner from putting his hand under her nightdress.

Maybe we are witnessing the unexpected but welcome arrival of a friend or friends.  But what sort of friends barge into the bedroom – are they being invited to join in the bedroom romps?  Somehow this couple with their faithful little dog sitting quietly at their feet and the sun streaming in through the unshuttered windows suggest otherwise.  But who can be certain.

The couple appear to be comfortably well off with spacious private grounds.  It would be  unusual to leave the curtains wide open while dressed in your nightie and draping your leg intimately over your partner’s lap if this were not the case.  It cannot be that the bedroom window is surrounded by trees of privacy otherwise the sun would not shine in so brightly and there are no signs of leafy shadows on the gleaming, evenly lit window ledge.
