A companion piece to the Marriage Feast at Cana painted a few months previously.  Here Jesus sits with the “publicans and sinners.” When asked why, He replies “I come not to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.”

He sits with a friendly arm around Levi while all around not so much a feast as an extended drinking session takes place.  On the left it is still daylight and the lady with the drinks is serving a relatively sober group.  On the right hand side it has become a moonlit night and the more scantily clad drinks waitress has to quell the attentions of the figure in green who is pinching her bottom and two well intoxicated drinkers who are rapidly skulling their glasses and yelling for more.  One drinker has gone beyond his limit and is passed out in his chair.

Jesus again sits as the focal point of a concentric ring of circles.  Levi is included in this space, the bottom pinching drunk to the right of Jesus also comes within its radius.  One disciple on the left has a concentric set to himself and both ladies serving drinks are, to differing degrees, contained within sets of rings.  The other characters may be more hardened sinners but none are hopeless cases in the eyes of Jesus.
