In this painting, the fruits in their glass bowl and the cheese and grapes on the plate seem ready to burst forward out of their picture space. Inanimate objects maybe, but they glow with an apparent life force every bit the equal of the young couple or the brightly coloured tropical fish and underwater plants in their sunlit aquarium.  Certainly they outshine the penguins going about life in their icy wasteland.

Perhaps it is the knowledge that the passage of a few days will bring no change to the penguins - they will still be shuffling around their timeless wasteleand and the fish will still swim in their sunlit water.  The young couple may return as an aged couple fifty years hence.  But, in a few days,  the perfect ripe fruits will be no more.
