No. 324 BLANKET MAN - COURTENAY
PLACE Courtenay Place is the most interesting of the major streets in central Wellington. It is full of restaurants, playhouses, bars, clubs and theatres. It livens up around 11.00 pm every night of the week and stays open until the last party-goer heads off. It was not always so. Twenty years ago when we moved to Wellington it was a very quiet place indeed. Blanket Man is a real person who sleeps rough in central Wellington. Here he is seen, badly hung-over and bleary eyed, caught in a shaft of light shining into the dark alley where he has spent the night. He yells out a protest. His elbow juts forward towards us as if to strike us a painful blow. Maybe he is about to be arrested. The Lord of the Rings movie world premier was soon to be held in a theatre down the end of Courtenay Place. There was no way Blanket Man was going to be making an unwanted appearance at that event. |
